Indian Head Penny History
James Barton Longacre, the US Mint chief engraver, designed this fantastic coin. It was the first small cent to carry a one-cent face value. In 1858, the US Mint produced only patterns and started minting regular issues in 1859.
Initially, it contained 88% copper and 12% nickel from 1859 to 1864. Later, its composition changed, and new coins were made of 95% copper and 5% zinc and tin from 1864 to 1909.

These coins were heavier initially and weighed 0.16473 ounces (4.67 g) from 1859 to 1864. From 1864 to 1909, their weight was lowered to 0.10970 ounces (3.11 g).
This penny is unique in one more way. It was the first US coin to feature a Native American image. Well, in a way. In fact, you can see Lady Liberty wearing an Indian headdress on the obverse. Only Philadelphia mint produced them this year, so all pieces are without a mint mark.

Extra fine – This coin is in almost near-pristine condition with a well-defined design. However, you can notice a faded luster and light scratching on its surface. The crucial point is the headband that needs to be still very detailed with complete and sharply defined letters in the word Liberty.
Fine – The penny of this grade was in circulation for a while. Therefore, you will see signs of wear and the raised texture will probably be worn out. Such a coin will be fairly pleasing but with numerous scratching and reduced highest details. All Liberty letterings within the headband are still visible.

Much of its texture is worn down, and the Liberty face is significantly smoothed.
