No one could ever imagine that the Standing Liberty quarter value would become so high in the 21 century when Hermon MacNeil designed this coin. However, a beautiful Greco-Roman Liberty guarding on a bastion attracts numerous collectors to search for the best-preserved coin for years. Let’s see why it is so special.
Standing Liberty Quarter Value
Hermon A. MacNeil designed the Standing Liberty quarter with a reeded edge made of 90% silver and 10% copper. It weighs 0.2 troy ounces (9.22 g) and has 24.3 mm in diameter. You can see Standing Lady Liberty on this $0.25 coin’s obverse, while the American eagle in flight decorates its reverse. Three mints produced these coins:
- Philadelphia without the mint mark
- San Francisco with a small letter S on the reverse below the eagle’s tail
- Denver with a small letter D on the reverse below the eagle’s tail

The original design from 1916 showed Liberty with one bare breast, following the ancient tradition. Unfortunately, many Americans were scandalized with such an idea, so the Mint quickly changed the controversial design and covered the statue.
Simultaneously, it was the opportunity for changing the reverse. The flying eagle was moved higher, solving the stars’ overcrowding issue by putting three under the bird.
There was another problem with the quick date’s wear and tear on the coin obverse. The Mint solved it in 1925 by recessing the date. The last Standing Liberty quarter’s series was minted in 1930.

You should be aware that many Standing Liberty Quarter coins were melted and lost over time, so their number is relatively lower than the reported mintage.
Additionally, most of these quarters are in poor condition, so grading is necessary to determine their current value. Sometimes the difference between the good quality coin and the one in the mint stage is a few hundred, even thousands of dollars.
Several dates and coins from the particular mint are rare, especially in MS grades, making such coins highly expensive. On the other hand, worn-out coins without a date are usually not worth much.
However, you should be careful with 1916 coins Type 1 and be aware that they were minted without dates.

Standing Liberty Quarters Types
Three US mints produced three Standing Liberty quarters types without proof quarters. Type 1 was minted in 1916 and 1917. In the middle of 1917, they started to make Type 2 with changed both obverse and reverse design.
Finally, mints decided to recess date below the rim in 1925, and this sub-type is sometimes known as Type 3.
Standing Liberty Coins’ Price
The Standing Liberty coins were minted from 1916 to 1930, and many of them have been destroyed over the years. Nowadays, their price depends on a few factors, including:
- Condition
- Coin type
- Year of minting
- Rarity
- Future value
The most expensive are coins in top condition and those with rare mintmarks and dates. For instance, quarters with the S mintmark are relatively rare, so they are usually costly.
