How Much is a 1925 Peace Silver Dollar Worth (Price Chart)

The silver Peace dollars were minted in limited quantities and for a short time, making them highly coveted American coins the US Mint ever produced. Since they are almost a century old, most pieces available on the coin market are worn out and in poor condition.

The 1925 Peace silver dollar value is always high for specimens in the mint state, particularly those minted in San Francisco. Even the coin in the worst condition will be worth some money thanks to silver content.

1925 Peace Silver Dollar History

The US Mint produced Peace dollars from 1921 to 1928 for the first time and then renewed production in 1934 and 1935. They replaced Morgan dollars melted down by the 1918 Pittman Act.

The period between World War I and the Great Depression was the time of an economic boom in the US, so the country needed a coin made of precious metal.

The Peace dollar was a symbol of the twenties in America, but its production ceased soon after the Great Depression. It was the last US circulating coin struck in silver.

Anthony de Francisci designed this coin after winning a design competition in 1920. The obverse is Liberty’s head, based on Teresa de Francisci, the sculptor’s wife.

Lady Liberty wears a radiate crown that reminds the Statue of Liberty while the word LIBERTY stays above. The obverse also contains a motto IN GOD WE TRUST and the date at the coin bottom.

Since the Coinage Act of 1792 required an eagle on the coin reverse, the designer added one. Unfortunately, it was the source of controversy because of a broken sword and olive branch it carried.

Most Americans disliked the broken sword, so the Mint removed it from the design. You can see the inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and E PLURIBUS UNUM on the reverse, on the coin upper edge.

The 1925 Peace dollar mintage was 10,198,000 struck pieces. It was a lower number than average, but it didn’t make these coins the rarest in the series.

For years, many coins survived in the mint state stored in the bagful in vaults. However, most spent a long period in use after releasing in circulation in the 1940s and 1950s.

As a result, beautiful specimens in the mint state are relatively rare, but finding one on the coin market is possible. However, you should expect the high cost for those in the highest grades. Such coins can reach at least $1,000, but their price can be even higher.

For instance, a piece in MS 67 grade will cost you $3,400 to $5,100, while the quality MS 68 specimen can reach $72,000 to $96,000 at auction. Unfortunately, such coins are scarce, and you will rarely see one on offer.

1925 Peace Silver Dollar Grading

1925 Peace Silver Dollar Grading

As you can guess, the coin condition is the deciding factor in determining the 1925 Peace silver dollar price.

You can get some money even for worn-out pieces since they contain precious metal, but their real value is historical. However, most collectors will pay more for a coin in the mint state. Let’s see the way of grading.

Uncirculated – A Peace dollar is without imperfections and visible signs of wear only when it wasn’t spent a minute in circulation. It still has a delicate mint luster, but you should be prepared that this 100-year-old coin’s tone has changed over time.

Extra fine – You can see some details missing on the Liberty’s cheek and hair, but wear and tear is only moderate and never widespread.

Sometimes, minor imperfections are visible on the inscriptions and numbers, while the coin’s texture is smoother than in specimens in the mint state. Still, this coin is beautiful and highly collectible.

FineThe Peace silver dollar in this grade has most details intact and recognizable, but signs of wear are visible on the surface.

Most major Liberty’s hair strands are separated, but the finer ones are a bit merged, while her cheek is flat. Plus, the eagle’s lower tail feathers on the reverse are still separated.

Good – This coin is mainly worn out with the smoothed and reduced design. You can’t recognize most details, so you can see smooth hair strands and flatten Liberty’s cheek.

Sometimes, it is impossible to recognize the date, mint mark, and letters. This specimen is not the best option you have, but some collectors will be happy to get one since this coin is scarce.

Market Analysis

As always, supply and demand will significantly impact the 1925 Peace silver dollar value. Currently, this coin’s lowest price is $17.22 for a piece in the worst possible condition, making its melt value higher than the denomination.

However, the significant silver content makes it worth even when it has no collectible significance. On the other hand, well-preserved pieces will be worth more since you should add their historical and collectible values to the primary silver price.

Judging by the coin market, you can expect the Peace dollar value to grow slightly in the future, making it an excellent investment in the long run. They will always be precious for collectors regardless of the current silver price on the precious metals market.

Thanks to silver content, the 1925 Peace dollar will be worth approximately $20 even in the worst condition. Since pieces minted in San Francisco are typically scarce and demand is high, they will be more expensive. Coins in high grades are collectible and can be worth a little fortune.
